Thirteen men, aged between 21 and 39, were arrested on suspicion of being members of unlawful societies in an islandwide operation conducted on Nov 28 and 29, said the police in a news release on Dec 3.

The operation was led by the Secret Societies Branch of the Criminal Investigation Department with support from Ang Mo Kio, Tanglin, Clementi, Jurong and Woodlands Police Divisions.

Officers checked about 40 public entertainment outlets, nightlife establishments and food and beverage outlets, and conducted background checks on close to 100 individuals.

The police added that regular enforcement operations will continue throughout the year-end festive period.

Investigations against the 13 men are ongoing.

Under the Societies Act 1966, anyone found guilty of being a member of an unlawful society faces up to three years' jail, a fine of up to $10,000, or both.
