White fumes from Bukit Timah Shopping Centre chimney leaves passer-by boiling mad
The fumes from a chimney in Bukit Timah Shopping Centre were so strong that one man could not handle it.
Stomper David was walking by the mall at 6pm on May 25, and noticed a big chimney blowing white fumes.
He speculated that the chimney was connected to gas cooking stoves from Buddy Hoagies Cafe & Grill.
"The white fumes were just releasing like nobody's business," said David.
"It was so bad that it reached the overhead bridge, and it smelled!" said David.
"The massive discharges affect patrons sitting outside Buddy Hoagies and those at the wooden benches located outside Anytime Fitness, in addition to the elderly/kids waiting for taxis and pickup at the stand."
David claimed people covered their noses while walking past the chimney.
"Not sure if it's hazardous or not, but definitely very bad for those with asthmatic symptoms," David said.
"Even though I do not have such medical conditions, my nose was irritated and I kept on sneezing."
In response to a Stomp query, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) said it requires retail food establishments to extract all fumes from the cooking range by an air cleaning system.
The spokesperson said: "In addition, food businesses should have appropriate infrastructure to minimise the likelihood of generating disamenities in the vicinity.
"This enables the businesses to exercise their social responsibility and be mindful of the impact of their activities on neighbouring premises.
"SFA will work with Bukit Timah Shopping Centre as well as the food businesses within to address concerns about fumes and heat generated from food preparation activities."
