# Resident disturbed to see pig head, crab and hell notes left at Bedok block after funeral wake

A resident was concerned to see paper and perishable offerings, which he said were left behind at a void deck in Bedok after a funeral wake.

Stomper Nabeel shared photos taken at Block 612 Bedok Reservoir Road on Oct 20 at around 4pm.

He claimed that a funeral wake had wrapped up after two nights.

## ‘A whole crab, a whole chicken, a whole fish, cockles and pig head’

“What lay in its wake (pun intended) were not only paper offerings (hell notes) being blown all over the place and into the open carpark or used cardboard boxes scattered around,” Nabeel told Stomp.

“There was also a big red tray of perishable offerings with a whole crab, a whole roasted chicken, a whole fish, some cockles and a roasted HEAD OF A PIG.”

Nabeel claimed that the items, which he spotted when he was heading to the shops, had been “left untouched (at the void deck) for a few hours”.

He shared: “I feel disappointed that Singaporeans lack general civic-mindedness and keep pushing their limits on how much mess they know they can cause and not be held accountable for it.

“I spoke to our estate custodian, and even he said it is very common for these types of offerings to be left behind for him to clean up.”

The Stomper also questioned why attendees of the wake had “failed to remind each other to be mindful even during the process of grieving”.

Nabeel said he reported the matter to the town council, adding: “How far will Singaporeans go in their absolute nonchalance and disregard for others in the community?”

## Bereaved family still around during inspection: Town council

In response to Stomp’s queries, Aljunied-Hougang Town Council (AHTC) said the funeral wake concluded on Oct 20.

“Based on checks with our conservancy team, the funeral tentage was still in place during an inspection conducted at about 2pm, and family members were still present at the void deck at that time,” the town council said.

Following the removal of the tentage and funeral-related items, the conservancy team carried out cleaning works at the void deck at around 4.30pm. The cleanup included the removal of all leftover items and offerings, AHTC added.

AHTC said it works closely with service providers and bereaved families to ensure that common areas are cleaned and restored for public use following funeral wakes, while exercising due sensitivity and respect for the solemn nature of such occasions.
