A man alleged that he was sold spoilt otah at a shop in Bukit Panjang but received neither an apology nor a refund.

Stomper Raven said he visited 8 Pending Cafe, located in Bukit Panjang Community Club at 8 Pending Road, at around 8.40pm on Jan 13.

He recounted: "A small otah costs $0.80 and a big one is $1.50. I bought 10 small ones for $8 and a copy of Shin Min Daily News for $1. I passed the cashier a $10 note and she gave me back $1 change.

"I tried the otah shortly after leaving the shop and threw it out immediately. It tasted weird."

Raven said he returned to the shop but was rebuffed by staff.

"Instead of apologising or refunding my money, the cashier ignored me and directed me to another lady," he added.

"The lady denied the otah was spoiled and said maybe I had taken the wrong one. She said, 'Why not you top up the difference of $4 and get 10 big otah for $12?'

"I turned down this offer and she did not want to admit that the otah was spoilt.

"This is unacceptable and I reported it to the authorities. Fortunately, I did not give any of the otah to my friend to eat!"

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) told Stomp it is investigating.

It added: "Food safety is a joint responsibility. While SFA puts in place and enforces the regulatory measures, food operators must play their part by adhering to good food hygiene and preparation practices. Food operators should also ensure their premises are clean and well-maintained."

Members of the public who have concerns about food safety practices by food operators should report to SFA via its online feedback form.

SFA said it takes a serious view towards food safety and will investigate all feedback alleging poor food safety practices.

As part of the enquiry and gathering of evidence, SFA may engage the feedback provider for more details and will not hesitate to take enforcement action if sufficient evidence has been obtained.
