A 37-year-old driver was arrested after a brief car chase in Admiralty in the early morning of Feb 27.

A machete, substances thought to be controlled drugs, related paraphernalia and 660 cartons of contraband cigarettes were found in his van, said police in response to queries from The Straits Times that day.

Officers were patrolling Sembawang Drive at 4.20am when they signalled to the suspect to stop for a check.

Instead, the van driver sped off, lost control of his vehicle and skidded in Admiralty Drive - about a minute's drive away, according to Google maps.

He then abandoned his van and made off on foot as officers followed.

When detained, his van was searched and the illicit inventory discovered.

Footage of the aftermath of the pursuit was posted on Facebook around 11am that day.

The suspect was taken conscious to the hospital and later arrested for driving without a valid licence, carrying offensive weapons in public places and suspected drug-related offences, said police.

He is also being investigated for other traffic-related offences.

Police have referred his potential drug offences and customs breaches to the Central Narcotics Bureau and Singapore Customs, respectively.

Investigations are ongoing.
