A 43-year-old man allegedly cheated more than $100 by using a modus operandi in which he pretended that cashiers had given him the wrong amount of change.

The police said they received multiple reports from different merchants in Tampines between June and November 2024, about a man who purportedly cheated their cashiers by claiming that he had been given a shortage of change for his purchases.

"Investigations revealed that the man allegedly paid for a low value product with a $100 note in some cases," the police added.

"Upon receiving the right amount of change, he would allegedly hide a $50 note and claimed that he was given the incorrect amount of change.

"The cashier would then provide the man with another $50 note without realising that the correct amount of change had been given earlier."

To avoid detection, the man also put on a face mask and headgear to conceal his facial features.

Through follow-up investigations and with the aid of images from CCTV and Police cameras, officers from Bedok Police Division established the man's identity and arrested him on Jan 9.

The man will be charged in court on Jan 10 with the offence of cheating, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine.
