A British woman living in Geylang said she felt safer in the red-light district of Singapore than in any "normal" street in the world.

Banker-comedian Sasha Frank revealed this to Singapore-based Russian YouTuber Max Chernov in a video interview posted on July 15.

Having been in Singapore for eight years, the single mum explained she used to live in "very manicures expat-land", but it was not for her.

Frank said she found a house in the heart of Geylang and loved it. She lived there for two years until April 2024.

"We had to move, but I can walk out of here at any time of night and get food," said Frank, referring to the house she currently lives in where the interview was recorded.

"I can get a haircut at midnight. I work weird hours, so that's amazing for me. I can get a manicure late at night... Weirdly, I always feel safer here than anywhere because there's always someone awake and around, and I love it."

She added: "I feel safer in the red-light district of Singapore than I do in a normal street anywhere else in the world.

"I never feel like there's any threat around here. It's just so fun."

This is in contrast with a 10-year Geylang resident who recently told Stomp that it was time to move as the "rowdiness" in the area seemed to have gotten worse.

Frank, who is divorced with an 11-year-old daughter, also dished about the worst date she had.

"I dated a guy who thought I was going to be really impressed by money and status and I'm not," she said.

"He was like all Rolex and talking about 'Oh, I'm an executive' and it was just like the worst, worst few hours of my life."

They were at a really fancy restaurant.

"I was like, I would rather be in a McDonald's with somebody that didn't even have a job than be here with this guy flashing his Rolex in my face."

Frank has a full-time corporate job but still does stand-up comedy at night. She is currently in London for a hosting gig.
