An Indian national, 37, was arrested for shop theft at Changi Airport on March 23.

The police were alerted after a handbag was discovered missing from a shop in the transit area of the airport.

Through ground enquiries and with the aid of CCTV footage, officers from the Airport Police Division established the identity of the man, detained him within 30 minutes of the report and prevented him from departing Singapore.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the foreigner was believed to be involved in a series of shop theft cases involving items such as watches, shirts, chocolates, and accessories amounting to more than $1,670 from four other shops.

The man will be charged in court on April 7 with the offence of theft in dwelling.

If convicted, he shall be punished with an imprisonment term which may extend to seven years, or with a fine, or with both.
