Endangered starfish spotted at Changi Beach: Look at the 'wriggling' tips on its arms
Stomper Lau Lup was at Changi Beach recently and was lucky enough to spot this endangered eight-armed starfish on the shore.
He was particularly amazed by how many arms it had and filmed a video of its bristling tips.
Said the Stomper: "This sea star found washed ashore on Changi Beach is actually endangered and rare! I have never seen a sea star with so many arms in Singapore!"
Lau Lup identified the creature as the luidia sea star, which is often found alone in sandy or silty shores.
According to wildsingapore.com, it is carnivorous and swallows its prey whole. It can also move rapidly and is more active at night.
Another distinctive trait of the luidia sea star is how it tends to drop off its arms when stressed, which is why you should not pick it up if you do encounter it.
The animal is currently listed as 'Endangered' on the Red List of threatened animals in Singapore. You can find more information about it here.
