Chalky tap water seen in Waterway Point toilets -- but no need to be alarmed
A shopper was concerned after noticing discoloured tap water coming from multiple washrooms at Waterway Point in Punggol.
Stomper Ealgene said she noticed this in the Basement 1 and Basement 2 toilets of the mall on Nov 19.
She said the water appeared "chalky and cloudy" across all taps she tested and shared a video of the issue.
Ealgene said she also spoke to a Basement 2 café staff member who happened to enter the washroom.
According to Ealgene, the staff member said their outlet had experienced similar chalky tap water since Nov 18, but the issue was not reported to mall management.
"She reiterated that their outlet typically boils all tap water before use and claimed that their tap water appeared normal that day, despite the visibly chalky water still present in the restroom at the time of our conversation," Ealgene alleged.
The Stomper raised concerns about communication lapses, saying it was worrying that such an issue was brought to the attention of mall management only through a shopper despite its potential implications for F&B tenants, families and young children visiting the mall.
Stomp understands that PUB was alerted to the case on Nov 19 at around 8pm. Officers were deployed to investigate, but did not detect any abnormalities in the water supply from PUB's watermains.
PUB was informed by Waterway Point's management that maintenance work on the water service system in the mall's east wing had been carried out on Nov 17 and 18.
In response to Stomp's queries, Waterway Point said its preliminary assessment found that the milky appearance was likely caused by fine air bubbles in the water, which can occur after maintenance works on the service system.
Stomp understands that the water typically clears up after a few minutes and remains safe.
"The safety and well-being of our shoppers and the community are always our top priority," said a spokesperson for Waterway Point.
"We have worked closely with PUB and our contractors to conduct a thorough investigation. PUB did not observe any abnormalities during their investigation, and the water remains safe for use."
More info about milky or cloudy tap water can be found on PUB's website.
