Admiralty resident about to call 995 over 'fire' -- but it's just someone burning joss paper
A resident was surprised when she saw flames from a distance on July 13.
It looked to Stomper Izan like there was a fire at Block 489 Admiralty Link at around 7am.
Izan, who sent a video of the incident, recounted: "I saw fire at the staircase landing and was about to call 995, but realised it was a man burning joss paper.
"The government has provided designated areas for burning joss paper, yet there are people who don't follow it. This can cause an actual fire if not monitored properly."
In response to a Stomp query, a spokesperson for Sembawang Town Council said: "We strongly discourage the burning of joss paper in common corridors, staircases, and other shared areas of our estates for reasons of safety and communal living.
"We regularly educate and remind residents to carry out such activities responsibly, preferably in designated burning bins located at ground level and away from building structures.
"We also collaborate closely with grassroots organisations and resident networks to raise awareness about this."
The town council did not receive prior feedback about the incident, said the spokesperson, who added: "We appreciate the resident's vigilance and concern.
"The town council will continue our outreach efforts and step up patrols to advise residents on safe and appropriate practices."
