$2.80 for iced lemon tea? Stomper calls out 'exorbitant' prices at Clementi coffee shop
A man has raised concerns about rising costs after being charged $2.80 for an iced lemon tea at a Clementi coffeeshop on Jan 16.
Stomper MaxRoh shared with Stomp that he was having lunch at FoodHub on Jan 16, located at Block 449 Clementi Avenue 3, when he was approached by a drinks vendor.
"I just ordered an iced lemon tea but when she brought it to me, I was charged $2.80 for it!" he said.
"I had no choice but to pay up."
The Stomper said he was 'appalled' and approached the staff at the drinks stall to ask what the rationale was behind such an 'exorbitant price'.
"She simply shrugged and said everywhere is expensive now," recounted MaxRoh.
"Please note that this is just a coffee shop, not a food court."
The experience left a sour taste in the man's mouth.
"What angered me the most is how business owners take advantage of consumers by using inflation as an excuse," he said.
"It's not just about the money but the cheap tactics used by them to short-change their customers.
He described his drink as just syrup diluted with water and filled with a lot of ice: "It wasn't even real iced lemon tea."
"Before anyone comes up with the typical 'if expensive, why you still buy', response, please note that I had no choice because I wasn't even aware of the price before I placed my order and I had no choice because I was dining in."
The Stomper has vowed never to return to the coffee shop.
"I have learnt my lesson," he said. "You have been warned."
