A 21-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman were charged with cheating on Nov 9 after allegedly buying mobile phones with allegedly stolen credit card information and reselling the phones for cash.

The police received a report on Nov 8 at 5.35pm about the man trying to purchase mobile phones at a shop at Marine Parade Road using a mobile wallet but failed despite several attempts.

Through follow-up investigations and with the aid of CCTV footage, officers from Bedok Police Division managed to establish the identities of the man and the woman and arrest them within seven hours of the report.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the man and the woman would respond to "fast cash" ads on social media and go to retail stores to purchase mobile phones, then sell the phones elsewhere for cash.

Three mobile phones, a bank receipt and cash amounting to $7,600 were seized as case exhibits.

The offence of cheating carries an imprisonment term of up to 10 years and a fine.
